Cold Start Ventures

Founder in Residence (CTO)

New York, NY · $150,000 · Full-time

About the company

Cold Start Ventures is the NYC-based venture studio behind Berry Street (Series B, Village Global / Sofina, telehealth-plus-dietitians platform now partnered with 1,250+ insurance plans including Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare) and 3Y Health (Series B, SoftBank / General Catalyst / Founders Fund). $2B+ portfolio value, eight incubations to date, seven of which are still around and succeeding. Founded and run by Yury Yakubchyk.

The studio brings $1.5-2.5M of day-one capital, validated theses, structured operating playbooks, and a 6x-higher-than-industry Series B survival rate. Founders own ~70% of their company post-investment, meaningfully more than other incubators. Investment partners then come in at a $12-15M post-money valuation. This is incubation #9, a stealth healthcare company being built right now by Ken Book (Founder in Residence / CEO) with Cold Start's full backing.

Cold Start's new company is the embedded, integrated contracts-as-a-service layer that flips EHRs and clinician-facing billing companies into revenue drivers, starting with psychiatrists, then expanding specialty by specialty.

The product is intentionally not hard tech: Ken's framing was "we're not building the next LLM here, the tech should not be that difficult, it just needs to be really high quality." The differentiation is on payer contracts and integration depth, not algorithmic novelty.

What the role needs is an excellent generalist builder who can take ownership end-to-end, write the playbook, decide what gets built versus bought, run revenue-cycle-management operations alongside Ken, and hire the first founding engineers once the workload demands it. This hire's first months are about getting the billing ops in order with the first few users, building the embedded contracts layer into one or two EHRs, and learning revenue cycle management cold.

Ken's biggest stated risk to the company is co-founder fallout (one of Cold Start's eight prior incubations failed for exactly that reason after two months), which is why the
