Applied AI Engineer

Mento gives people access to coaching from operators: engineers, marketers, and people who have been CTOs. Those coaches work with managers and leaders at companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Vercel. The product is the software and AI around the human coaching conversation, so coaches have more context and members have tools they can use after the session. Mento is not trying to replace coaches. It is the challenger to BetterUp, built as an AI-native, human-centered model.

The company is remote-first across the US, Canada, and Latin America. It has raised $8M and runs as a profitable, customer-funded business. Seed stage, about 11 to 50 people, founded in 2020. The next 18 months are about changing how coaching works, on a high-ownership, flat team.

Mento is hiring a product-minded senior software engineer to build the AI and software coaching product, and the tools that sit next to human coaches. This is an applied-AI, full-stack product seat: someone who has put AI into real products. It is not an ML research or data-engineering research seat. You join a small, flat team and work with design and coaching.

The work is 0 to 1. You ship regularly. You build AI features on foundation models so they stay adaptable and reusable. You turn coaching workflows into agent experiences the coach network can use. You build data pipelines and integrations across productivity and learning tools. You also teach the team data and AI practice through reviews and working sessions.

The differentiator the Head of EPD looks for is critical thinking. Walk through a project you built, explain the choices with a clear mental model, and reason when pushed on what you would change or how you would add a feature. There is a live coding interview on how you actually use LLM tools: when they work, how you check the output, and how you automate more of the flow. Later rounds are a system design with two engineers, a build of that design in your own tools, a session with design, then closing conversations with the Head of EPD and the Co-CEO.

Bar: about 8 to 10 years, and you have shipped data-related products to real users. Not a new grad. Server-side web experience, comfortable in dynamic languages, ideally event-driven systems. The stack is Go, TypeScript, and Ruby. The specific stack matters less than adaptability. Pure mobile or embedded-only is a harder fit. Startup experience. Big-tech plus consulting only, with low ownership, is a miss. Ex-founders are a strong signal. Senior leaders who want to be an individual contributor fit. The wrong question is why the coaches are not being automated away.

Remote across the US, Canada, and Latin America. Visa sponsorship is limited. Equity is about 0.03% to 0.08%. Offsites twice a year, unlimited vacation that people use, a $500 home-office stipend, and your own Mento coach. Posted work intensity is 9-9-5.
