Bottom line
Score founding AE mock calls on discovery, ICP targeting, objection handling, and close attempt. Use 1 to 5 per bucket. Set a minimum total before you spend founder calendar time. Reject candidates who interview well but freeze on the phone.
Score founding AE candidates on a live mock cold call selling your product. Four buckets, 1 to 5 each, so two interviewers can compare notes.
Why a scorecard beats gut feel
Founders often leave mock calls with a vibe and no shared language. A short scorecard forces the same questions every time and makes it obvious when two interviewers disagree.
You are not hiring for polish. You are hiring for the ability to sell your product under light pressure.
Four scoring buckets
Rate each bucket from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong). Write one line of evidence per score so the number is not a vibe.
| Bucket | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Discovery | Asks about pain, budget, and timing before pitching |
| ICP targeting | Opens with a relevant hypothesis for your buyer |
| Objection handling | Stays calm and redirects without arguing |
| Close attempt | Asks for a clear next step, not a vague follow-up |
Pass line
Set a minimum total (for example 14 of 20) before a candidate reaches the founder loop. If scores swing by more than two points between interviewers, tighten the ICP brief first.
